I was at a party last night and got to speaking to a gentleman about the impact of social networking sites Facebook on society. Apparently, the new trend is for employers to vette applicants by doing a facebook search! This particular gentleman lost a job due to a prospective employer checking out his social networks on the interent and rejecting him on the basis of the company he keeps!
Is this a worrying trend? Or could it be a force for good? Is this the future?

I can see how it will help you avoid getting stuck in dead end jobs with bosses who hate you in the first place. So yes. The guy would be better off without such a crap boss in the first place!
I can how people may start to really become inhibited about the net though. I wonder who won't be hiring me over these comments?
